Silver Lake Public Library Summer Reading Program 2010 Overview
Silver Lake Public Library Children’s Librarian Tracey DeShazo announced another successful Summer Reading Program (SRP) for the Silver Lake Public Library. DeShazo noted, “Area children signed up for Summer Reading Program sessions in greater numbers than last year. During the course of the program in June and July, they actually attended in greater numbers than last year—even with the busy summer schedules kids have today.”
Besides the many volunteer hours described below, donations of money, snacks and craft materials were received from participant parents and other family members. “It would have been hard to have the variety of interesting and complicated craft sessions and activities with so many Summer Readers without these donations,” said Silver Lake Library Director Dan Knupp. “We truly appreciate the community’s generosity to their Summer Readers. But we are also indebted to the Friends of the Silver Lake Library organization that donates a substantial yearly sum from their annual book sale to the Summer Reading Program.”
This year in order to accommodate increased SRP 2010 numbers and to ensure smaller, more beneficial classes, preschoolers where split into two separate classes. Both classes met on Thursdays; the first from 10 to 10:30 am; and the second from 11 to 11:30 am. The Kindergarten through 5th grade children met Wednesdays from 10 am to 11 am.
The teen group met three times in June and twice in July. The first meeting was an afternoon planning meeting; the second was an evening movie night where two movies were viewed. The third was an evening game night where teens competed with each other using X-box computer games. The second and third teen meetings featured pop and snacks and the final wrap-up meeting was held during the afternoon where the teens enjoyed pizza and finished with a water fight in the library back yard.
Diane Herrmann, Lori Hamilton and Bridgette Remer, area teachers, volunteered planning and teaching expertise for different classes and activities. Participant mothers volunteered vital assistance in planning, teaching and supervision of crafts and other activities. These essential volunteers included Marlo Greenwood, Annette Feiger and Rebecca Corber. Eight student helpers also volunteered on a regular basis to help in keeping order and assisting children and instructors during classes and activities. These teen volunteers included: Amber and Ashley Hamilton, Dawson DeShazo, Erin Taylor, Ashlyn Lane, Morgan Athon, Ashley Womack and Nikki Womack.
The SRP Teen Photo Contest will culminate yet this week with judging finished on Aug. 11. Prizes will be awarded to the winners sometime during the week of August 16. The original photo contest deadline was extended due to teen students’ busy summer schedules. On July 7, Silver Lake photographer Rick Battis presented a mini-photo seminar giving the teens ideas and motivation for them to get out and take some pictures! They have submitted their work that and it is giving the judges quite a challenge in choosing winners.
As a treat for participating readers, David DeShazo created a Summer Reading Program video that premiered at the K-5th grade and Preschool closing programs. Summer Readers enjoyed seeing themselves in the video and remembering the summer’s activities. View the video by clicking the line at the top of this article.
